Microsoft Word (for Beginners) Part 1

Microsoft Word is a word processing software. You can easily jump into it, type few things and format according to your will. Microsoft Office has been a very popular program and everybody should learn a bit of it. This program has got a complete new look in its 2007 version. This tutorial and the next to follow are based on Office 2007.

Download the trial version of MS Office 2007 from here: MS Office 2007 Trial download

At first, we should learn about the new interface. Take a look at the image below:

Number 1: This is TAB area. You can switch to different TABs to find different options under it. Default TAB is 'HOME'.

Number 2: This is RIBBON. You can find various options here.

Number 3: This is Type area. Click on it an a mouse cursor will show up. You can then type whatever you want.

Number 4: This slider lets you zoom in or out the type area. You may also use your Mouse Wheel while holding the CONTROL key.

Let's type in few words and try different formatting options under the HOME tab.

I have typed in a few words here. Take a look at the image below.

Say, if I want to make the 'lazy dog' in BOLD letters, I have to select those words first. This is because we have to show computer which area we are trying to affect with our commands.

To select a word or several words, first click on the beginning of the letter you want to begin the selection (here I placed my mouse before 'L' of 'lazy'). Then hold down the SHIFT key and press the RIGHT ARROW key to make a selection. The letters will go black if the selection is made. Stop when you want to end selection (I have stopped at 'G' of 'dog').

Now press the large 'B' button as indicated in the image below:

You selected text will be BOLD. Instead of clicking on the BOLD button, you may press CTRL + B.

You can try the next to buttons besides the BOLD button which are ITALICS and UNDERLINES.

See you on the next tutorial.
